MozillaVPN Review 2023

Table of Contents

I was hoping this big name would do well in online privacy, but Mozilla VPN turned out to be a simple provider that wasn’t powerful enough to block the best VPNs.

Mozilla VPN can unblock some streaming sites, supports torrenting, and uses strong encryption with a kill switch for privacy, but its features and server network are too limited to be cost-effective. If Mozilla makes the service more powerful and offers more server options, it could become a viable budget alternative to its larger competitors.

Even with its limited features, you can still get a lower price than more powerful VPNs if you opt for a long-term subscription. Since Mozilla VPN comes with a 30-day money-back guarantee, you can still try it out risk-free and see if you like it.

Speed Test

Mozilla VPN uses Mullvad’s servers. In our previous Mullvad VPN tests, we found that all servers had decent speeds. With that in mind, we expect the Mozilla VPN speed test results to mirror the numbers shown by Mullvad VPN.

We noticed that Mozilla VPN is super fast when switching between servers. On all the servers we tested, the VPN took less than two seconds to establish a connection.

Overall, the ping time increased by 21 times, which is not good news if you want your website or game to load quickly. On all servers, we expected latency to be well over 70 milliseconds – the minimum acceptable ping time for trouble-free gaming. If you need a VPN to access restricted online games or get better gaming deals, you should check out our list of the best VPN for gaming.

There is no correlation between increased ping time and increased distance. For example, the server in São Paulo, Brazil, which is about 5,788 miles away from our test location, had a ping time of 735 milliseconds. However, when we connected to a server in London, which was 6,329 miles away, the ping time was 366 milliseconds. The above results show that while websites and online games load slower, latency does not necessarily increase with distance from the server.

Download speeds dropped slightly (12%) and upload speeds dropped by 26%. Download speeds were nearly the same for all servers. Even for connections to more distant servers, such as Australia and the Netherlands, we see only a slight drop in download speeds. Upload speeds, however, show a big difference, with drops of up to 37% in some cases.

Overall, Mozilla VPN’s speed is still good. It does not significantly increase the complexity of your Internet connection, and the speeds are sufficient for most web activities. However, if you’re looking for a service for high-speed Internet activities like gaming or torrenting, you should check out our list of the fastest VPNs.

Pricing Structure

Mozilla VPN has a flat rate price of $4.99. This is much cheaper than NordVPN or ExpressVPN or other well-known VPN monthly packages that typically charge $10-$12 per month.

Don’t get too excited. Mozilla VPN doesn’t have a long-term plan. That means if you buy a subscription, you’ll end up paying more than for the long-term plans offered by established VPN providers.

Privacy and Records

Mozilla is a trusted brand, and this history is one of the main selling points of Mozilla VPN. Moreover, Mozilla VPN has partnered with Mullvad, a well-known provider that focuses on privacy, which makes the product even more credible.

When you log in, Mozilla VPN registers your IP address, other technical information (such as operating system and hardware configuration), and some interaction data. However, to reiterate Mullvad’s privacy policy: Mullvad does not log traffic, IP addresses, session duration information, bandwidth, or DNS requests.

Mozilla VPN also asks users to follow Mozilla’s general privacy policy. While not as technical as some other providers, the company’s commitment to privacy is extensive. It is also rumored that a third-party audit is coming soon, which will further strengthen its position as a private and secure VPN.

Customer Support

Being such a large company, we thought there would be multiple ways to contact Mozilla’s customer support. But much to our dismay, this was not the case. In fact, we didn’t have the option to chat online or call a real human; instead, we had to rely on Mozilla’s online help center, community forums, and their Facebook and Twitter accounts. Other than that, Mozilla VPN is pretty easy to set up and use, so we don’t think the lack of support matters to you, and it doesn’t matter to us.

Frequently Asked Questions

Is Mozilla VPN a good deal?

While Mozilla VPN is fast enough to surf the web and watch Netflix, you’d be better off trying a more powerful VPN. In addition to Netflix and BBC iPlayer, other providers unblock more streaming sites and are more secure for downloading torrents.NordVPN has stronger security features and a larger network of servers – and it costs less per month for a 2-year package!

Can I get Mozilla VPN for free?

Mozilla VPN is free for 30 days with a money-back guarantee, but there is no free or trial version. There are some decent free VPNs out there, but they have restrictive data limits and clogged servers. Worse, many of them record your personal data to sell to marketing companies, leaving you vulnerable to hackers (and defeating the whole purpose of a VPN, which is to stay safe and anonymous online).

Does Mozilla VPN really keep you safe?

Mozilla VPN keeps your data safe and your identity hidden, but it doesn’t protect you from common online threats like malware, phishing scams, or viruses.

Is it illegal to use Mozilla VPN?

Using Mozilla VPN is perfectly legal as long as you don’t use it for illegal activities. While it is perfectly legal to unblock streaming sites, it is not legal to download copyrighted TV shows and movies.

Bottom Line

According to our review, Mozilla VPN is far from being a mature VPN. It hasn’t been around long enough to suggest that it’s still in its infancy and not strong enough to compete in the industry. It has managed to unblock two of the four streaming services that use WireGuard and allow torrenting. They are of good quality, but unfortunately not enough.
