Hide.me VPN Review in 2023: Malaysian Magic with Zero Login Policy. But Service?

Table of Contents

Hide.me is a Malaysian VPN service that has been in operation since 2012. It has always had a zero-login policy and offered a free tier option. However, there have been some changes since the initial review.

Currently, it has over 1,900 servers in 75 locations in 47 different countries, but strangely, Malaysia is not among them. It has also listened to user feedback and will now unblock US streaming services, including Netflix, Hulu, Disney Plus, Amazon Prime, HBO Max, and more.

Up to 10 devices can be connected at once, which is more generous than many other services, and there’s also support for WireGuard, which will launch in late May 2020. Just go to Settings > Agreements and select it from the list.

The free service has also been significantly improved to offer 10GB per month. If you run out of your quota, you can still use the service, but you won’t be able to choose which of the five free sites you want to connect to. The free service still doesn’t unblock these streaming services, but if you don’t want to pay for a VPN, it’s one of the better options.

The connection speeds of a VPN are one of its most essential features. It can be difficult to tell whether or not internet remarks can be trusted. That is why we have our own VPN speed test, which is updated daily. The most recent results are shown in the table below.

Hide me’s VPN connection speeds have increased substantially after they introduced the WireGuard protocol, compared to other VPNs that do not utilize this protocol.

Not much has changed about the Hide.me Windows app. In the middle, there is a large button to enable/disable. Below that, the “Change” button in the bottom right corner takes you to a list of locations, and on the left you can see your computer’s current IP address.

A new feature is the notification icon in the upper left corner. This additional feature is called the Message Center. It notifies users about service updates, such as new server locations or new features.

Hide.me also supports a number of streaming services, including Netflix as well as others that are less picky about VPNs, like Amazon Prime Video, Hulu, Disney+, and HBO Now.

Hide.me’s protocol option is WireGuard, a new and popular VPN protocol that promises easier implementation, better security, and faster speeds. WireGuard is not yet the default configuration for OpenVPN, though Hide.me says that the WireGuard implementation is part of the full service, unlike the many other VPNs that are currently testing options.

When you dive into the settings section of the app, there’s a lot more here. There are the usual settings like boot on startup and auto-connect. hide.me even has a fallback protocol where you can specify the order in which the app should try to connect to the various VPN protocol options.

Stealth Guard, on the other hand, is an add-on feature to Split Tunneling that prevents apps from connecting to the Internet unless they have a Hide.me VPN connection. You can use this feature for all apps or block only certain apps from connecting when there is no VPN connection.

Hide.me is available for Windows, Mac, Linux, Android and iOS. Additionally, there are browser plugins for Chrome and Firefox that support SOCKS proxy.

Pricing Plans

As far as pricing is concerned, it is one of the simplest VPNs on the market (in some ways). The main reason for this is that they have a free version.

Months 1 Month 1 Years 2 Years

They will charge you the full amount when you purchase it. Even though the two-year plan seems to be the cheapest option, you will have to put up with the initial price increase. This can be something that discourages new users, but it is common in the market.

Obviously, Hide Me VPN is not that cheap. To put things in perspective: Hide.me VPN’s annual plan costs the same as ExpressVPN’s 1-year plan, making it one of the most expensive VPN services on the market. You don’t have to go far to find a cheaper competitor.

You can pay via credit card, PayPal, SEPA direct debit, or even cryptocurrency. All packages come with a 30-day money-back guarantee. So, if you don’t like something, there is a way to fix it.

Server Locations

According to the website, Hide.me currently has over 100 servers covering over 30 countries. This is a very small network compared to larger providers like ExpressVPN, which has over 1,500 servers.

One of the advantages of the server list is that it gives tips on which server to choose for which purpose. It also shows you which servers are available for P2P, similar to the desktop application’s list.

Overall, our experience was quite good despite the small server network. Connected to servers in New York, Los Angeles and London, we were able to play 1080p videos without buffering. We also used the same servers to play online games without any issues.

When we tested Hide.me in the past, we had issues with the initial connection. This was not the case this time, so things seem to have improved in this area.

When we tested Hide.me for speed in the past, it performed very well, but the new test seems to rank it in the middle. Our goal is to make our speed tests as empirical as possible. We use test servers in Canada and connect to different test servers from different providers (in the UK, USA, Hong Kong, Germany and Australia).

User Experience

Hide.me is an easy-to-use VPN and signing up is as simple as choosing a subscription level, entering your details and payment information, and providing an email address. When you sign up for a free account, you won’t see a payment screen.

Once you verify your email address, you can simply create a username and password, set your communication preferences, and then click the “Create Account” button.

If you have downloaded Windows, Mac, Android or iOS, you can click on the appropriate operating system and let the installation wizard do the rest. For other operating systems, setup guides and support are available to help you get started.

It automatically connects to the best available server, so you can browse anonymously without any further action on your part. You can change the server by clicking the “Change” button, but remember that you need to turn off the VPN first. More options can be accessed from the settings icon on the right side of the connection screen.

Supported Platforms

Hide.me supports a wide range of platforms and devices, especially the most popular ones. You can install it on your router and protect your whole house at once.

When choosing a VPN, make sure that you can use it on all devices connected to your network. Here are all the platforms covered by hide.me, including native and manual configurations.

The platforms mentioned in the table above are the native apps provided by hide.me VPN, which means that for desktop platforms, there are apps for both Windows and macOS operating systems. You can also use this VPN on Linux, but you have to configure it manually since there is no native app available. When it comes to mobile devices, Android and iOS are also on the list. As for web browsers, you can find extensions for Chrome and Firefox browsers.

As for other devices, there is a native app for Fire OS that will make you happy if you have an Amazon media streaming device at home. And to protect all other devices, you can install hide.me on a compatible router.

There are customized clients for Windows, Mac, iOS, and Android devices, as well as Linux (Ubuntu). Basically, all major platforms and operating systems are covered. You can also use hide.me VPN on your router so that the connection covers all devices connected to it – your entire home or office network, which is very handy. The company provides detailed setup instructions for all platforms.

Transparency reporting is the foundation of your records policy. According to Hide Me, all 20,542 requests that have occurred are always met with “Hide Me has no records and therefore cannot provide any further information.” answered.

The Malaysian Data Protection Act contains data protection obligations, such as the obligation to inform data subjects of the purposes for which personal data is collected and the obligation to maintain a list of disclosures of personal data to third parties.

Hide.me offers OpenVPN encryption on all platforms. Since the last review, Hide.me has removed access to several protocols such as L2TP and PPTP. However, SSTP is still available for those who wish to use it.

Overall, this is good news for Hide.me users, as OpenVPN is our recommended protocol for privacy and security. And Hide.me uses a robust implementation of OpenVPN with PFS.

It’s an extremely strong OpenVPN implementation thanks to the powerful RSA-8192 handshake, which makes Hide.me encryption both secure and future-proof.

Kill Switch is available in Windows, Mac and Android clients. This is ideal and means that users can be sure that it won’t leak from all of these clients. The lack of a kill switch on iOS is not surprising, as it is common in the VPN industry (and generally considered Apple’s fault).

Most VPNs claim to help you access geo-blocked sites, and Hide.me is no exception, with the site promising to “avoid annoying censorship“.

This is not the case with BBC iPlayer. The site claims that Hide.me should be able to unblock it, but that didn’t work for us, and on all three UK servers we saw the error message “This content is not available in your location”.

Things improved when we switched to the US and were able to access US-exclusive YouTube content immediately.

Unfortunately, when we tried Netflix in the US, the bad news returned and we couldn’t access any of our test servers.

Since hide.me offers a free version of the software, users do not have to register and/or pay before installation, unlike most other VPN providers. To install, you simply select an installer that is compatible with your operating system and download it (you can manually configure the VPN protocol you want before installing the application if you want). After a few minutes of following the instructions on the hide.me website, I was able to get the program working, and the desktop client worked as well.

The desktop client is clear and gives a good overview of the program. There are only a few functions on the main screen, accompanied by a central “Connect to VPN” button. With a single click, you can easily navigate between servers in different locations, grouped by country and sometimes providing more specific information (in the US, for example, you can select a server on the East or West Coast). Favorites can be saved, and the search function can be used to find servers in specific countries, but no information is provided about the expected performance of those servers.

The only complication is opening the settings menu, but this is not necessarily a bad thing, as hide.me offers a lot of freedom for advanced users. Basic settings like autostart, server location and general application behavior can be configured automatically, but also advanced settings like the possibility to configure DNS servers manually or exclude certain programs and applications from VPN connections over shared tunnels.

Block websites

This is a great option for those who celebrate freedom of expression and want unrestricted access to the Internet. If you live in a country that restricts access to certain websites or online services, you can easily bypass these restrictions and enjoy the Internet.

I tried hide.me Canada VPN to access Netflix and was surprised how well it worked without any blocking issues. I logged into the VPN and was able to use BBC iPlayer as comfortably as if I were in the UK.

Multihop Double VPN and VPN Bolt

Hide.me provides advanced capabilities in addition to the fundamental VPN functions (which are labeled as “lab features” by Hide.me because they are currently in beta): VPN “bolt” and “multihop” double VPN. The “multihop” double VPN tunnels your connection over multiple VPN sites, resulting in a double shield for maximum digital protection and anonymity.

Hide.me’s “multihop” function is more versatile than that of other applications such as NordVPN (see our NordVPN review). It allows you to select your preferred entrance and exit servers rather than providing you with a list of country combinations to choose from. You can opt to route your traffic to specified places while avoiding locations that may compromise your privacy.

A “bolt” VPN, on the other hand, is a traffic acceleration technique. It circumvents ISP throttling to optimize VPN connection speeds and VPN functionality. Furthermore, it tunnels your communication wherever feasible using the TCP network protocol rather than UDP.

Please keep in mind that the “multihop” double VPN and “bolt” VPN functions are only available to Premium customers.

VPNs have been around for a long time, and people have come up with all sorts of encrypted tunnels. My preferred method is to use the OpenVPN protocol. The advantage of OpenVPN is that the technology is relatively new and open source. This means that its code has been thoroughly tested by many users to find possible vulnerabilities.

The Hide.me Windows application I tested uses OpenVPN, which speaks in its favor. It also supports the IKEv2 protocol, a new security protocol. It also supports L2TP/IPSec, as well as the older SSTP and PPTP protocols. I would advise against using the latter two, but they can be useful for older support.

Hide.me also supports the SoftEther VPN protocol. This is the first service I know of that uses this particular technology, which the company claims is designed to be difficult to detect and block. Other VPNs offer similar features that attempt to obfuscate VPN traffic to get around VPN blocking. TunnelBear, for example, calls this feature GhostBear. WireGuard is the successor to OpenVPN, which guarantees unparalleled speed and state-of-the-art security. The protocol is still under development, and Hide.me does not currently support WireGuard in its Windows application.

Customer Support

Let’s take a look at the main features of Hide.me

  • 24-hour support
  • Live chat support
  • Ticketing system support
  • Money-back guarantee
  • No free trial

Besides the installation guide and extensive FAQ articles on the website, the main form of customer support is live chat.

Staff respond within minutes, making this support very responsive, at least better than I’ve seen in some time.

However, if your question is beyond the technical capabilities of the customer support staff, you will be referred to the technical department. Then the process is slower and the wait time increases.

Again, this customer service is much better than what many other premium VPNs can offer, and the fact that 24/7 live chat gives a very positive impression.

Frequently Asked Questions

How do I use Hide.me VPN?

First of all, you need to download the Hide.me app from the website. If you opt for the free package, you don’t need to provide any details at all. If you pay for the Hide.me Premium service, you will need to enter the payment method and the email address for your account.

Is Hide.me VPN secure?

Hide.me VPN uses the well-known security and encryption protocols. The service has been tested to be free of DNS, IP, and WebRTC leaks, and the service is based in Malaysia, which is not an information-sharing country. Moreover, an independent consultant has verified Hide.me’s no-documentation policy.

Does Hide.me VPN work?

Hide.me can disguise your IP address without affecting your connection speed as long as you connect to a VPN server that is closer to your actual location. If you use a server that is further away, the VPN may become too slow to use.

Is Hide.me VPN free of charge?

Yes, the free Hide.me package includes all the security features. However, it limits you to 10 GB of data transfer and restricts you to 5 servers and one connection at a time.

Is it safe to use Hide.me VPN?

Generally, yes. Hide.me VPN does not store any activity or usage logs, so your privacy is safe. During our testing, we encountered some issues with the kill switch, which is a potential vulnerability.

Bottom Line

We love Hide.me. The VPN is feature-rich without being cluttered, and easy to use without being patronizing. 14 Eyes works in countries outside the network, and its no-login policy seems to be on point. Plus, the free package is a real gift.

However, we have to be honest about its weaknesses, and we can’t ignore the fact that Hide.me is not useful for streaming at all. Even if the VPN is able to fool international servers without getting Netflix in trouble, the download speed to remote destinations is so slow that the videos cannot be watched.

If you want to disguise your IP address while browsing the Internet, there is no better option than Hide.me. For streaming videos or games, Hide.me is not the best choice.
