BT Guard VPN Review 2023

Table of Contents

BTGuard is based in Canada. They are backed by TorrentFreak, which gives them considerable credibility in terms of P2P use. They have a relatively small network of servers compared to some other providers. However, they offer 256-bit encryption and their service is very simple and easy to use.

With such a small network of servers, BTGuardVPN reliability can be a bit of an issue. However, overall the speed is quite good. I would say they are fast enough for casual users.

However, if you’re looking for something for heavy downloads and extensive use of media content, I’d probably recommend looking for a VPN that offers a better level of performance.

Pricing Plans

In terms of pricing, there’s not much to choose from.

  • 1 Month BTGuard Torrent Proxy for $6.95/month
  • 1 Year BTGuard Torrent Proxy for $4.99/month or $59.95
  • 1 Month BTGuard VPN for $9.95/month
  • 1 Year BTGuard VPN for $7.49/month or $89.95

Payment Methods

Below is a list of payment options offered by BTGuard

  • Bitcoin

  • Mastercard
  • American Express
  • Bank transfer

Privacy Policy

There are some clear statements. The headline says, “No usage records are kept,” and the privacy policy says, “The company does not collect your Internet Protocol (IP) address or customer usage.” This sounds positive, but without a definition of the term, it’s hard to say for sure.

For example, Does “customer usage” refer only to network traffic and browsing history, or also to session data such as connection times, or perhaps assigned IP addresses? There is not enough detail to say for sure.

The situation is similar elsewhere. Here’s an encouraging statement on data management: “We do not sell, trade or rent your personal information to other companies. However, since the policy does not define what is meant by “personal information”, it says almost nothing.

This is where the problem gets worse. “We will collect and use of personal information solely with the objective of fulfilling those purposes specified by us and for other compatible purposes, unless we obtain the consent of the individual concerned or as required by law.”

Our suspicion is that BTGuard just doesn’t think so, and that the policy may have been written by someone who has no idea about privacy laws and who just wanted to create a privacy policy page with text that looks legitimate. However, that doesn’t help us figure out what BTGuard is actually doing, and all we can say is your guess is as good as ours.

User Experience

Signing up for the BTGuard service is pretty straightforward. It offers BitTorrent proxies and VPNs, which are probably too expensive for most users, especially compared to top VPN like NordVPN. However, it does offer some guidelines for setting up a VPN on all platforms.

The service is also quite easy to use. Whether you’re using a proxy to maintain anonymity when torrenting or a VPN service to bypass ISP throttling, these servers are hardly an obvious burden. Overall, BTGuard is reliable at hiding your identity during P2P file transfers, but the inability to access US Netflix and the lack of a dedicated app the experience.

Customer Support

BTGuard offers the following types of support to its customers.

  • VPN setup instructions
  • Proxy setup instructions
  • Frequently asked questions
  • Knowledge base
  • Troubleshooting
  • Contact customer support
  • Contact Sales

While the customer support content is solid, we recommend that BTGuard install a live chat feature. Customers typically want easy access to customer support through a quick and easy question and answer session.

BTGuard only has a “Contact Us” page where customers have to log in and submit a ticket just to ask a general question. This is overly complicated and not user friendly at all.

How do I Install BT Guard to make my Browsing Safe?

Before you can fully install Btguard VPN, you need to download the VPN and configuration file. Once downloaded, install the VPN on your computer and configure it so that you can connect to Btguard with full confidence.

  • The first thing you need to do is install the VPN on your computer.
  • You will then need to configure the files you downloaded from the BTGuard website if you downloaded the post version.
  • You then need to copy these into the VPN configuration folder.
  • Finally, the files that are fully configured for BTGuard VPN are installed.

Note: That copying the configuration file can be done automatically to the correct location. If you have previously used another VPN service with OpenVPN, it is recommended that you delete any existing configuration files before connecting to the BTGuard VPN full server as this may cause problems.

Pros and Cons

  1. Strong encryption features
  2. Unlimited speed
  3. Unlimited bandwidth
  4. Ease of use
  5. Great security
  6. Allows P2P sharing
  7. No logging
  8. Pay with Bitcoin
  1. Only has servers in 3 countries
  2. Not very good customer service
  3. No money back guarantee
  4. No free trial

BTGuard is a terrible product with a higher than average price, no customer support, no local client, no trial packages, no refunds and no streaming. It only offers three server locations for torrenting. But even if you need a dedicated P2P-friendly VPN, BTGuard fails to impress with its dodgy privacy policies. It has good speeds, but I can’t recommend it due to privacy concerns.
