Speed test

Boxpn install quickly and we had no problems with the user interface. The apps are responsive and pretty to look at, with a list of servers, a choice of protocols and some default settings to choose from. Switching between servers is also quick and easy, with no need to disconnect from an active VPN server and then connct to a new one.

We first tested a US server that was randomly selected by the app. Download speeds were average but usable: 9.3 Mbit/s on a 72 Mbit/s test connection. We also tested India, where 6.1 Mbit/s was measured.

We tested a place closer to us, Italy, which offered faster speeds but was still slower than the average of 17 Mbps. Finally in Germany, we achieved speeds of 30Mbps.

Servers and Countries

BOXPN does not do well in this area. It does not have many servers and is not present in many countries. It has around 150 servers in 32 countries. The most popular server locations are.

  • United States
  • Australia
  • Canada
  • China
  • France
  • Denmark
  • Germany
  • Italy
  • Netherlands
  • Spain
  • Sweden

Although BoXPN has servers in countries where VPNs are mostly restricted (like Russia and Turkey), it pales in comparison to industry-leading VPNs that have thousands of servers.

This is important because the strength and speed of a VPN connection is directly related to the distance between VPN servers. This means that the more servers a VPN provider has in a given country, the more stable and consistent the VPN connection will be.

Streaming Performance

There are no issues with BoxPN, Netflix and Hulu in the US. We saw the same results whether we used a regular server or one marked as streaming-optimised. Both sites worked fine and the videos loaded quickly. Amazon’s Prime Video, however, did not work at all.

As with Netflix and Hulu, we were able to access BBC iPlayer content whether we used a streaming server or a regular server.

But as mentioned in the section on speed, sometimes simply accessing content is only half the battle. In reality, BBC iPlayer is unavailable due to long buffer times and poor quality.

User Experience

This VPN provider is really easy to install and set up on any device, regardless of technical capabilities.

With its user-friendly app and reliable servers, BoxPN offers users a great experience on Windows, Mac, iOS and Android devices. It offers very detailed instructions and tutorials on how to set up your VPN on all platforms, and the website and app are very intuitive and easy to use.

Frequently Asked Questions

What user data is logged by Boxpn?

Only your email address and username. The company does not log your location, IP address, amount of bandwidth or time of use.

Where is Boxpn based?

In the Seychelles and is not subject to mandatory data retention laws for Western companies.

Does Boxpn’s VPN service work in China?

BoxPN is one of the few VPN providers I have used that actually has servers in China. This means that the provider also operates within China. However, keep in mind that China often cracks down on VPN providers operating in that country, so you should check with BoxPN before committing.

Summary

Boxpn is neither bad nor worse – it’s somewhere in the middle. It offers OpenVPN and 256-bit encryption, with an incomplete set of semi-advanced options. It doesn’t log usage data, but it doesn’t mention connection logs either. Its 100 servers are worth checking out, but streaming success rates vary from country to country. The biggest shortcoming is the lack of free or even paid short-term tests that would allow eager torrent’s to test the speed of the P2P-optimised servers – for now, Boxpn’s only advantage seems to be its support for torrenting.
