Atlas VPN Review 2023

Table of Contents

Atlas VPN is a relatively new VPN app. Similar to other similar privacy apps, Atlas VPN promises an instant convenient and anonymous web browsing experience, without technicalities – especially those that intimidate newbies and those with little experience with VPNs – but without compromising on security. Atlas VPN also stands out from the rest by touting itself as the best free VPN.

Speed Test

Let’s first take a look, at how the connection speed is when using the IKEv2 tunneling protocol. I used the premium version of the app to test the service in several countries around the world. Without VPN enabled, the base ping was 1ms, the download speed was 294 Mbps and the upload speed was 314 Mbps.

Country Download Speed Upload Speed

244 Mbps
29 Mbps

242 Mbps
42 Mbps

260 Mbps
31 Mbps

139 Mbps
7 Mbps

275 Mbps
17 Mbps

206 Mbps
42 Mbps

257 Mbps
16 Mbps

Overall, the results were pretty good. The biggest drawback is the upload speed, as it drops dramatically throughout. Download speeds did not drop as much, only by about 20%. Unsurprisingly, the Australian servers performed the worst as they were too far from where I live. However, I was surprised by the quite good performance of the Singapore server.

As always, these tests should not be taken too seriously as the results depend on many factors. But I can draw some general conclusions about Atlas VPN – download speeds don’t slow down much, but upload speeds take a serious hit.

Server Locations

The service is still new, so we don’t expect a huge proliferation of servers. In fact, we were right, as Atlas VPN only has about 17 servers worldwide.

However, we found that these servers are well spread across key countries on the map – countries that are likely to unlock key streaming services.

Atlas VPN has three server locations for free users and the following server locations for premium users:

  • Australia
  • Austria
  • Belgium
  • Canada
  • Denmark
  • France
  • Germany
  • Ireland
  • Italy
  • Netherlands
  • Norway
  • Singapore
  • Spain
  • Sweden
  • Switzerland
  • United Kingdom
  • United States

The server network is still small, but we have to admit that Atlas VPN is still new and about to expand further.

Security and Encryption

To protect all your personal data, AtlasVPN uses the leading encryption standard AES-256 and the transport protocol IPSec/IKEv2 (other protocols are not offered). To further enhance security, you can enable the kill switch option, which shuts down Internet access when the VPN connection is abruptly terminated, so that your browsing data remains secure. However, this option is disabled by default, so you need to be aware of this.

On mobile devices, these traditional security mechanisms are complemented by the Safe Browsing feature, which prevents you from opening malicious websites and malware-infected apps.

Although the provider is registered in the USA, it supports the secure and private exchange of large files via P2P and torrent clients.

AtlasVPN privacy policy details its no-logging policy, ensuring that it does not collect your real IP address or “store any data that identifies what you browse, view or do online through this VPN connection.” This also means that it does not share your data with law enforcement and government agencies that may request information about your online activities while using the VPN.

However, some data may be collected, which includes app usage data (events in the app such as launching a trial or changing settings) and basic device data, which includes device type, model, brand name, operating system version, device ID, language, time zone and city location, which may be more than some users are comfortable with. The vendor also said it “can use advertising analytics to measure the performance of our campaigns

Customer Service

Customer service is crucial to a good user experience. It also shows how reliable the provider is. There is no live chat, which most people need. There is, however.

  • Email systems
  • Frequently asked questions
  • Ticketing system

Email support is the most useful, but you may have to wait all day to get an answer, as I did. So ask lots of questions at once to get quicker results.

Frequently Asked Questions

Can I use Atlas VPN on my device?

Atlas VPN currently offers an app for Android and iOS devices. The team will release versions for Windows and macOS in the summer of 2020. There is no information yet about other platforms or browser extensions.

Is Atlas VPN free of charge?

Yes, there are free and premium subscriptions.

Atlas VPN still has room for improvement before it can compete with the best services, but its current offering is pretty good value for money.

Records doesn’t disappoint anyone, and neither does the basic app. However, if you happen to need a server that Atlas VPN doesn’t currently have, then the limited number of sites probably won’t be enough.
