Best VPN for Torrents in May 2022

If you torrent regularly – or even occasionally – it’s essential to use a VPN. But not all services offer the speed and security you need to torrent smoothly and safely. In fact, many of them are downright dangerous, as they can compromise your privacy and expose activities for which you’d rather remain anonymous.

That’s why I’ve tested dozens of VPNs to find out which ones perform best. The 10 services highlighted below are the only ones that met my strict criteria for security features and download speeds. They also support P2P sharing, even in countries where restrictions or torrent sites are blocked.

Best 10 VPN for Torrenting

Finding a VPN that is secure, fast and reliable enough to support torrenting is not an easy task. Most services just don’t cut it – but a handful of options have what it takes to let you torrent with complete peace of mind.

The 10 services listed below offer basic security features like kill switches and no-logging policies to ensure your activity doesn’t fall into the wrong hands. They also offer fast connections to servers all over the world, which means you can download the content you want without having to wait forever.

NordVPN for Torrent

  • Unlimited bandwidth and traffic
  • Highly encrypted so that your activities remain hidden

Of the VPNs I’ve tested, NordVPN offers the best combination of security, speed, and affordability. It’s also super easy to use, making it ideal for everyone from VPN beginners to experts. In fact, it’s not just my favorite VPN torrent; it’s my favorite VPN, period.

NordVPN offers a large number of servers that are specifically optimized for P2P sharing. You can easily find them in the “Pro Servers” section, or use the server recommendation tool to quickly find a P2P-optimized server for the country of your choice.

I found the recommended servers to be very fast, which isn’t surprising, and our detailed tests showed that NordVPN delivered consistently high speeds on all of them. This makes it ideal for torrenting, as you can download or seed large files quickly and easily.

SurfsharkVPN for Torrent

  • P2P sharing on all 3200 servers
  • Fast and stable downloads
  • AES 256-bit encryption plus MultiHop double encryption for added protection
  • Auto-off switch and strict no-logging policy
  • NoBorders mode to bypass even the strictest restrictions
  • 30-day money-back guarantee
  • Works with Netflix, Hulu, Amazon Prime Video, BBC iPlayer, HBO GO and more
  • Compatible with Windows, Android, macOS, iOS, Chrome, Firefox, Linux, and some routers

If Surfshark is already on your VPN list, it’s probably because of its price. It’s the clear winner of our cheap VPN guide, thanks to the rock-bottom price of its multi-year plan. Honestly, it’s an absolute bargain.

Especially considering that Surfshark actually has a price tag to back up that status. For torrent enthusiasts, there’s P2P support, zero-knowledge DNS servers, Bitcoin support, split tunnels, and even URL and ad blocking on most servers. 24/7 support via email and live chat is also very handy if you have problems interacting with Surfshark’s torrent client.

Coming back to cost efficiency: A single subscription covers an unlimited number of devices. So your VPN will work on PCs, Macs, phones, TV streaming devices, game consoles, routers and all other compatible devices – and maybe even some of your friends and family!

It includes kill switches for Windows, Mac, Android, and iPhone – making it the only provider on this list that covers all four. It’s great, but in our testing we had some minor issues on Windows, and we felt like we weren’t warned clearly enough when the connection was lost.

CyberGhostVPN for Torrent

  • 80 dedicated P2P servers
  • Constant speed and unlimited bandwidth
  • Very easy to use
  • AES 256-bit encryption and multiple security protocols
  • DNS and IPv6 leak protection for full data protection
  • 45 days money back guarantee
  • Also works with Netflix, Hulu, Amazon Prime Video, BBC iPlayer, Disney+, HBO Max, and more
  • Compatible with Windows, Android, macOS, iOS, Chrome, Firefox, Linux, and some routers

CyberGhost is a fantastic VPN for torrenting, and while it has a lot of features, it’s still great and easy to use. From the moment you start, you can see that torrenting is a priority, as the VPN automatically configures itself to provide the best torrenting experience.

This means that you don’t have to mess around with protocols or random test servers to find the best P2P performance – CyberGhost knows what you want and does it. It even has a big “torrent anonymous” button that makes the whole process completely idiot-free. There’s also a clear no-logging policy, a reliable kill switch, and split tunnels, just as you’d expect.

One particular feature we’d like to see in any torrenting VPN is CyberGhost’s application protection. This essentially means that you can set the VPN to automatically connect to the server of your choice when you launch an application. In practice, the application in question will be your torrent client, and if you set it up, you won’t even need to turn CyberGhost on to protect it.

One of the few drawbacks is that the app is a bit crude, but while it doesn’t offer as comprehensive an experience as ExpressVPN, CyberGhost is a fantastic VPN that specializes in torrenting.

Private Internet AccessVPN for Torrent

  • Over 12,000 servers in 74 countries
  • Allows multiple devices to connect up to 10
  • Strict log-locking, AES 256-bit encryption, OpenVPN/WireGuard encryption, SOCKS5 proxy, kill switch, ad-blocker
  • Secure access to BitTorrent, uTorrent, qBittorrent, Vuze, Deluge, Popcorn Time, BitLord, etc.
  • Fast speed
  • Free trial and 30 days money back guarantee

Private Internet Access is a US-based VPN, and although it belongs to 14 network areas, it comes down to its no-log policy. It is known as one of the best torrent VPN services for many reasons, and its strict no-logging policy is one of them.

PIA, which stands for Private Internet Access, has a great network coverage. If you take a look at the list above, you can see how many servers it offers, with around 3500+ servers available for torrenting. However, the speeds are not consistent compared to Surfshark and ExpressVPN, but they are still quite fast.

For security, it uses military-grade 256-bit AES encryption, the best encryption technology in the industry. It supports a huge platform of PIA protocols, including OpenVPN/WireGuard and port forwarding, all of which help provide faster or more stable speeds.

Then there are other advanced features like DNS and IP leak protection, split and kill switch, and ad blocker. There are many more benefits of PIA that make it popular with users.

You can connect up to 10 devices, which is good because PIA supports multiple devices and is compatible with torrent platforms. These include Windows, Android, iOS, macOS, Linux, routers and browser plugins.

You can try it out for a while with a free trial or just use the VPN with a 30-day money-back guarantee.

IPVanishVPN for Torrent

  • All 1600 servers support torrents
  • Fast download speeds
  • AES 256-bit encryption and a strict no-logging policy
  • WiFi protected torrenting away from home
  • Unlimited device connectivity
  • Works with Netflix US, BBC iPlayer, HBO GO and more
  • Compatible with Windows, Android, macOS, iOS, Chrome, Linux and some routers

When it comes to the number of servers available, it’s hard to beat IPVanish. IPVanish is one of the most popular VPNs in the world, takes privacy very seriously, and is designed specifically for torrenting. It doesn’t create logs like ExpressVPN does, and it doesn’t even use connection logs for troubleshooting like ExpressVPN does. Both the L2TP and OpenVPN protocols use 256-bit encryption. IPVanish uses shared IP addresses and even has a built-in feature that allows users to change IP addresses at regular intervals, such as every 60 minutes.

Speeds are good and bandwidth is unlimited. IPVanish explicitly identifies certain countries as P2P-friendly, such as the Netherlands (more on that below). A kill switch can be enabled in the settings. IPVanish is particularly popular with Kodi users because it offers lightweight Android apps and is compatible with all the Kodi add-ons we tested.

These apps are available for Windows, macOS, iOS, and Android.

Pros
  1. Network specifically designed for torrenting
  2. Designed specifically for streaming
  3. Easy to use Kodi and Amazon Fire Stick/FireTV
Cons
  1. Netflix or Hulu cannot be unlocked
  2. No live customer support

IvacyVPN for Torrent

  • P2P traffic support
  • Kill switch included: Yes
  • Encryption and available VPN protocols: AES-256; OpenVPN, PPTP, L2TP, SSTP, IKEv2
  • Expected throttling and overall performance: up to 64.1% on average (general usage). Expect better performance when using a dedicated P2P server

Perhaps Ivacy is not the most well-known VPN brand. However, don’t think that this is a barrier to using it. It is a powerful VPN service that promises to help you get your privacy back while unblocking the internet as much as possible.

First of all, Ivacy’s user interface is simple and extremely beginner-friendly. However, the app also includes some powerful and customizable VPN protocols. This lets you restore anonymity on the Internet, block new types of websites (even media streaming platforms), and download P2P files. There are no specific servers listed here, as all Ivacy servers support P2P. The only downside is that Ivacy limits your Internet connection, but you can fine-tune that by trying different protocols and connecting to a server nearby.

This is truly one of the best torrent VPNs in 2022, so if you want to take a closer look, we offer you our Ivacy VPN review

Hide.me

Hide.me VPN is a service that has consistently impressed us in our tests. VPN has software for all platforms, and these applications are both easy to use and rich in advanced features. With Hide.me, you get kill switches, DNS leak protection, encryption options, obfuscated servers, port forwarding, and split tunnels. This makes the VPN perfect for downloading via BitTorrent. Moreover, Hide.me has a zero-logging policy, which means that it never stores records about the user while connected.

Hide.me is a VPN that puts great emphasis on privacy protection, but it also makes it easy to unblock torrent directories. You can use this VPN while using any torrent client, even apps like Popcorn Time or Flixtor. We love that you can use this VPN on up to 10 devices at once. And with average download speeds below 80Mbps, you can download content at lightning speed. Try our 30-day money back guarantee, risk-free.

MullvadVPN for Torrent

Swedish company Mullvad is a true VPN provider. It is one of the few services that does not ask for any information from users, not even an email address. When you sign up, you get a numbered account. It follows a strict no-login policy, which means that your privacy will not be compromised. Ultimately, you’ll be able to use torrents and P2P services without worrying about being tracked by your ISP or anyone else.

Mullvad has features such as VPN Killswitch, which monitors for leaks in the VPN tunnel and can exclude you from the service, which is an additional benefit for torrent users.

Finally, it supports all BitTorrent software, although it recommends users to use qBit Torrent, as Mullvad considers clients like uTorrent or BitComet (although not blocked by Mullvad) unsafe due to the presence of malicious adware, open source code and poor privacy settings. Last but not least, their website provides an instruction manual for the torrent itself.

AirVPN for Torrent

AirVPN’s server network is perfect for torrenting, but it’s not easy to use. The VPN includes a kill switch, port forwarding, and a strong privacy policy – everything you need for anonymous streaming and torrenting. However, it can be complicated to use, so AirVPN is only recommended for advanced users who know what they’re doing.

Pros
  1. Optimized for P2P traffic
  2. Supports torrenting over IPv4 and IPv6
  3. Trusted names for torrenting
  4. Includes a shutdown switch
  5. Port forwarding enables projection
Cons
  1. Not as user-friendly as other VPN
  2. Complicated server list
  3. Requires manual calibration

Is torrenting a serious privacy risk? Why is that and how can VPN help?

When you download a torrent file, your torrent client connects to other clients around the world to upload and download the file simultaneously. This is simply the way torrents work, there is no way around it. In the P2P world, a group of users actively involved in maintaining a torrent file is a swarm, and each swarm consists of a large number of IP addresses.

This means that by disclosing your IP address, your personal information is also disclosed. This is exactly what anti-piracy agencies use to track down pirates around the world, with the most egregious examples coming from the US and Europe. As anti-piracy efforts increase, it’s time to think about how you can protect your privacy when downloading torrent files.

VPNs work in two ways. First, every time you connect to a secure server, you get a new IP address. A VPN also creates a secure tunnel for your data and encrypts network traffic – including P2P traffic. In other words, you can be anonymous online while using a VPN, which is crucial for downloading torrent files and staying safe while torrenting.

What should you consider when choosing a VPN for torrenting?

Each VPN has its own features and policies. Ideally, you need a P2P-friendly VPN that has a good track record of keeping users safe. So, here is everything you need to consider when looking for the best VPN torrent.

  • Specific P2P servers: Make sure that the VPN you choose supports downloading torrent files, as most of the time it does not. In other words, a VPN can support P2P traffic from all servers, or it can only support P2P traffic through a specific server. If you come across such a P2P server, you should check its location, as you don’t want to use a server that is too far away, which can affect the speed of your Internet connection.
  • Kill-Switch Availability: Well, Kill-Switch is the solution to this problem and stops all Internet traffic in a crisis situation.
Website blocking feature: This is especially true for torrent search engines, as they are usually exposed to the strongest attacks. With a VPN, you can unblock websites and access them unhindered again.
  • The performance is fast and reliable: So, be sure to read useful reviews to learn more about the actual performance of the VPN you are considering. Also, be sure to try different protocols and different servers as this will speed up your VPN.
  • Many strategically placed servers: VPNs with a large number of servers can host more users at the same time. Therefore, these VPNs usually offer fast performance. Currently, the best-rated VPNs have 3,000 to 6,000 servers spread all over the world.

How does a VPN protect your privacy when torrenting?

A VPN can protect your privacy when torrenting in two important ways.

First, it prevents your ISP and others in your local and ISP network from seeing that you are torrenting. Since files downloaded and uploaded using BitTorrent are encrypted as they pass through your ISP’s server network, it is impossible to identify their contents. it takes a lot of time and resources for ISPs to even crack the encryption of their VPN service.

Secondly, a VPN prevents other users who download and/or upload the same files as you from seeing your IP address. BitTorrent is a P2P protocol, that is, a peer-to-peer protocol. This means that everyone is connected to a so-called “swarm” that uses the same torrent file. Any device that joins the swarm can see the IP addresses of all the other devices in the swarm. Many BitTorrent clients even allow you to see a list of all the other devices you are connected to when you leak or transfer files over the network.

Without a VPN, your real IP address can be used to identify your next location and ISP. This is how copyright trolls find torrent users and send them threatening emails (see our Torrent Security and Legal Guide for how to deal with them).

VPNs hide your IP address, so other devices in the group can only see the IP address of the P2P VPN server. The best VPNs for torrenting usually use shared IP addresses, which means that dozens or even hundreds of users share the same IP address. This large number of users makes it almost impossible to trace torrent activity back to individuals. Moreover, if you use one of the VPNs without logging into the list, the VPN provider won’t have any user data to give out in case of third-party requests.

Blocking your IP address also protects you from hackers using it as a backdoor into your system to learn your personal information and even harass your home. Your IP address is like your home address, but for your computer.

Why hide your IP address when torrenting?

Piracy is often associated with pirating, and piracy is theft. Besides, when torrenting, you expose yourself to files from unknown sources, so it is often desirable to protect your identity. We strongly recommend that you only access torrent content that you can access legally to avoid getting into hot water. If someone gets caught, it’s unlikely that the police or copyright holders will come knocking on the door.

Copyright owners are often big media companies that outsource piracy suits to slick law firms called “copyright trolls.” Copyright trolls monitor popular torrents to obtain the unique IP addresses of devices connected to the swarm to upload or download files. These IP addresses are then matched with the ISP assigned to the client. The copyright troll sends a settlement letter or copyright infringement notification to each torrenter through the ISP. The settlement letter demands payment and threatens legal action if the user does not pay.

As you can imagine, IP address spoofing is very popular among BitTorrent users. All VPNs mask your real IP address with the address of the VPN server. Unfortunately, not all of them do a good job. Most VPNs do not protect against certain types of leaks that can reveal your real IP address to third parties. These include DNS leaks, IPv6 leaks, and WebRTC leaks.

  • DNS leaks occur when a DNS request is made outside of an encrypted VPN tunnel that exposes an IPv4 address. Our recommended VPNs all provide protection against these types of leaks.
  • IPv6 leaks occur when IPv4 traffic passes through the tunnel, but IPv6 traffic does not. This is common on Windows 10 computers. Some VPNs can prevent this, but if this leak occurs, it is recommended to simply disable IPv6.
  • WebRTC is a communication protocol for voice and video chat applications that run in a browser, such as Skype for Chrome. Even if you have a VPN enabled, WebRTC requests will expose your real IP address. Few VPNs prevent WebRTC leaks, but as an option, you can disable WebRTC in your browser.

The best VPN apps prevent such leaks in any case. ExpressVPN and NordVPN are particularly leak-proof due to their combination of kill switches and leak protection. Even if the connection somehow fails, no identifiable traffic will escape the tunnel. It’s also important to choose a VPN that doesn’t store logs. Many VPNs claim to be log-free, but this claim often refers only to the traffic logs of your online activities. Many so-called “no-log” VPNs still log the user’s IP address, which is a problem for torrenters and anyone else concerned about their privacy. None of the VPNs on our list store traffic logs or IP address logs.

Bottom Line

Penalties and enforcement against online piracy have gradually increased over the last 20 years.

While all copyright holders have the right to sue anyone who gets their material for free without their permission, the aggressiveness of some countries against people who download torrents can often extend to cases where the downloaded files are not in fact illegal. With the best VPN for torrenting, you’ll be able to keep such situations at bay and download legal torrents with the certainty that you are outside the watchful eyes of the authorities.
