CyberGhost vs NordVPN

Table of Contents

Among the virtual private network providers we tested, CyberGhost and NordVPN have been going head-to-head for quite some time. These two hold such high positions for similar reasons.

If you take a look at our CyberGhost review, you’ll see that it does well in almost every category, but we particularly like its pricing, ease of use, and split-tunneling features. Likewise, our NordVPN review highlights NordVPN long history of excellent pricing and ease of use.

How do you Choose a VPN?

In this article, I’ll share the most important categories to look for when researching VPN services. I’ll explain why each service is important, share how each provider performed in that category, and determine which VPN did the best job.

CyberGhost is not one of those VPNs that newbies are familiar with. However, experienced VPN users will have encountered the service a time or two. They can tell you that it has pretty solid features.

The most prominent advantage you get in the case of CyberGhost is its remarkable server coverage. Currently, the VPN has over 6,000 servers in over 90 countries. As far as mid-range to high-end VPNs are concerned, they can’t even compare to that.

CyberGhost’s VPN coverage doesn’t come at the expense of internet speed either. It may not be the fastest VPN service in the world, but it has above-average speeds. So, there is no doubt that it can support all your internet activities. All activities are supported here, from streaming media and games to web browsing and the best file downloads.

NordVPN as one of the best VPN services in the world, NordVPN offers a number of benefits that set it apart from other providers. It may cost more than many of its competitors, but there’s no doubt that it gives you full value for your money.
With NordVPN, you get everything you could possibly want. The service has over 5,400 servers worldwide. They are all located in high traffic areas and low traffic locations. With this kind of access, you can quickly sign up for services that may be restricted in your country.

NordVPN offers a wide range of features to get around restrictions. It can quickly bypass restrictions from services such as Netflix, so you won’t have problems accessing content.

NordVPN Internet speeds are very good, as you would expect from such a VPN. No matter what you want to do online, this VPN has the bandwidth and the ability to help you out.

NordVPN includes all of this and offers a no-compromise package that includes support for all major platforms and reliable customer support.

Speed Test

Speed plays a big role in choosing which VPN is best for your needs. In the NordVPN vs. CyberGhost speed test below, my base speed (without VPN) was around 500 Mbps. All tests were conducted from my location in the US using the official VPN app.

Note: Both NordVPN and CyberGhost support the WireGuard VPN protocol. Since this is the fastest VPN protocol, it was used for the speed test of each VPN.

For this comparison, I tested servers in the US and the UK.

Test 1: Seattle
server in Seattle: 12 Mbps(On average).

This is the result of CyberGhost’s speed test, which was very slow and didn’t even exceed 20 Mbps. Now let’s see if NordVPN performs better in the same place.
NordVPN server in Seattle445 Mbps(On average).

This is one of the fastest VPN speeds we have ever measured. NordVPN is significantly faster at this point, 433 Mbps faster than CyberGhost VPN! Now on to the next speed test.

Test 2: Los Angeles
‘s VPN server in Los Angeles: 32 Mbps(On average).

At around 32 Mbps, this is another slow test result for CyberGhost VPN. Can NordVPN do better?
NordVPN‘s server speed in Los Angeles is 304 Mbps(On average).

With this server setup, NordVPN is again significantly faster than CyberGhost with speeds of over 270 Mbps(On average).

Test 3: New York
So far, NordVPN has outrun CyberGhost in terms of speed. Let’s see if that will be different for the last two sites.

CyberGhost‘s New York server runs at 46 Mbps(On average).
Here’s another site and another example of CyberGhost’s speed lag.
NordVPN‘s servers in New York run at 280Mbps(On average).

NordVPN is the clear winner, with servers in the US, beating CyberGhost at every location.
The last server I tested was in the UK. It was a CyberGhost server in the UK with a speed of only 6.33Mbps(On average).

No, that’s not a typo. CyberGhost was running single digit speeds on this UK server. I can only assume that the UK server is overloaded with users, resulting in slow speeds for everyone on the server.

So let’s take a look at how NordVPN compares. Here is a UK NordVPN server at 295Mbps(On average).

Despite the long distance between my physical location and the UK VPN server, NordVPN was able to deliver speeds of almost 300Mbps(On average). That’s impressive, especially when compared to CyberGhost, which struggles with low speeds on all of its servers.

Why is NordVPN so much faster than CyberGhost?

NordVPN and CyberGhost should be very similar in speed, as both support the WireGuard VPN protocol. However, unlike CyberGhost & NordVPN server network has a big advantage.

These NordVPN server network upgrades give them a great advantage in terms of speed and reliability.

  • They currently use dedicated (proprietary) hardware with higher bandwidth
  • Some NordVPN servers run on 10Gbps bandwidth channels (which is not possible with other VPN)
  • Introduction of more global server locations

Unlike NordVPN, CyberGhost doesn’t seem to be investing in network upgrades. Below is a screenshot of my recent CyberGhost review. As you can see, several CyberGhost servers have reached their maximum capacity.

While testing CyberGhost, I noticed that many of the servers were overloaded with users.
If you’re evaluating performance, NordVPN is the better choice and one of the fastest VPNs we tested.

You’ll also love the protection this service offers you when you are online. It combines military-grade encryption, a kill switch and port forwarding, so you’ll always be safe, regardless of the websites you visit. CyberGhost’s privacy features are also top-notch, which is due to the company’s strict no-logging policy. On top of that, you get a moderate price and can even connect up to seven devices.

Security, Privacy, Encryption and Protocols

For the most part, NordVPN and CyberGhost VPN offer comparable security. Both use military-grade AES 256-bit encryption, a perfect forward encryption to protect traffic and personal data. Since they have a proven no-logging policy, no connection logs or other information is stored anywhere. You also don’t have to worry about DNS and IPv6 leaks, as both are proven to protect your IP address and DNS requests from the outside world.

Like most advanced VPNs, NordVPN and CyberGhost use a number of security protocols, including OpenVPN UDP/TCP, IKEv2/IPSec, and the latest WireGuard protocol, which combines the speed of IKEv2 with the security of OpenVPN. However, NordVPN goes a step further by extending WireGuard’s dual NAT system to ensure complete user privacy. This is called NordLynx and is only available from NordVPN.

If you lose your VPN connection, you can use the kill switch provided by both providers to ensure you stay protected. However, the split tunnel can be accessed directly through all CyberGhost apps via an exception list in the Smart Rules settings, and NordVPN’s Chrome and Firefox browser extensions and mobile apps also allow this, although this only encrypts browser traffic.

Finally, NordVPN is very active and vocal in its ongoing security overhaul. The company has partially completed an audit by independent cybersecurity firm Versprite, as well as a full infrastructure audit and vendor security assessment. NordVPN is also slowly but surely converting its servers to RAM disk mode to ensure that physical storage on the servers is not possible.

NordVPN offers users a new generation of AES 256-bit encryption and 4096-bit DH keys. The provider also uses Perfect Forward Secrecy to ensure that encryption keys are exchanged during each session.

CyberGhost also uses AES-256 encryption and Perfect Forward Secrecy to ensure that encryption and decryption keys are always different. Both providers offer the highest level of encryption, which is not surprising since they are two of the most popular VPNs on the market.

Tunneling protocols are an important factor in encryption and can affect the security of a connection. NordVPN offers customers a choice of just three protocols – OpenVPN, IKEv2/IPsec, and Nord own proprietary NordLynx protocol:OpenVPN is offered over UDP/TCP, while NordLynx is a WireGuard development that offers users more privacy protection. Alternatively, iOS users can opt for IKEv2/IPsec as this protocol works better on these operating systems.

CyberGhost offers similar protocols, including OpenVPN, IKEv2, WireGuard and L2TP/IPsec. I like that both NordVPN and CyberGhost offer weaker protocols like PPTP, which results in faster connections, but ultimately there are a lot of bugs in their code.

NordVPN is one of the longest running services that makes it easy to unblock popular channels. In fact, NordVPN gives you access to multiple Netflix libraries, including the US, UK, Japan, and Canada. We can also unlock Amazon Prime Video, BBC iPlayer, Hulu, and more.

What about CyberGhost when it comes to unlocking channels?

It is one of the few VPNs that offer a dedicated streaming model with a number of servers that unblock streaming sites around the world. CyberGhost can effortlessly unblock Netflix, YouTube, HBO Now, BBC iPlayer, Hulu, Amazon Prime, and more.

However, the subtle differences between the two VPNs when it comes to streaming foreign content libraries are buffering times and video quality. NordVPN is generally faster and more reliable, while some CyberGhost servers require longer buffer times.

CyberGhost admits that its service rarely works in China, as its website is blocked there and there are no mirror sites. Since there is currently no reliable way to run this service in China, we recommend CyberGhost if you are in China.

NordVPN, on the other hand, works fine in China, but also offers a mirror site if you want to download software or other configuration-related material. NordVPN gives you complete anonymity and global access within China, and you don’t have to change many special settings.

Winner for Unblocking: NordVPN

Multiplatform Support

It is not uncommon for users to have devices that use different platforms. These platforms are the operating systems that the devices run on, such as iOS, Android and Windows.

NordVPN is known for its excellent compatibility with multiple platforms and offers native app support for Windows, Linux, macOS, Android, iOS, Kindle Fire, BlackBerry, and Amazon TV.

The VPN is also compatible with several browsers, including Chrome, Safari, and Mozilla. NordVPN can also be set up to work with your home router, allowing secure connections for devices that use your router.

CyberGhost is also compatible with multiple platforms. The VPN supports a variety of routers, NAS devices, Raspberry Pi devices, and extensions for the Chrome and Mozilla Firefox browsers.

Both VPNs score high on multiplatform support, but NordVPN wins with the ability to configure the router separately.

Winner for Multiplatform Supports: NordVPN

Customer Service

Besides usability, customer support is also a very important factor. A good or bad customer support experience can make or break a service. Below, we share our experiences with NordVPN and CyberGhost customer support.

  • Both NordVPN and CyberGhost have customer support that can be reached via live chat. In both cases, you can get in touch with a real person via live chat.
  • We received good responses from both NordVPN and CyberGhost.
  • With both providers, you can only speak to customer support in English.
  • Both NordVPN and CyberGhost have a customer support database that answers frequently asked questions.
  • While reviewing and comparing the providers websites, we found that the information on the CyberGhost support page is outdated.

Winner for Customer Service: NordVPN

Streaming Services

NordVPN and CyberGhost are both capable of bypassing the VPN blocking measures used by most streaming sites. Both providers are capable of streaming Netflix, Hulu, Amazon Prime Video, and even BBC iPlayer content, which is why they both rank high in our Best VPNs for Hulu and Best VPNs for Netflix articles. However, both behave very differently when it comes to streaming.

With CyberGhost, there are standard servers and a handful of dedicated streaming servers. You can read about this in our NordVPN vs Windscribe article, though Windscribe uses a similar system. We managed to get Amazon Prime Video, Netflix, and Hulu up and running on CyberGhost’s dedicated and non-dedicated streaming server.

This means that both Hulu and Amazon Prime videos load very slowly on regular servers. We also had issues with Hulu where videos would load interminably and we would be staring at a black screen. These issues were not present on CyberGhost’s streaming servers, but Amazon Prime still seemed to be a bit slow and sometimes still loaded at a very low resolution.

NordVPN, on the other hand, does not have a dedicated streaming server. All of the streaming sites we tried worked fine, including Amazon Prime, which responded faster than when we used CyberGhost’s VPN network. This improves the user experience without a dedicated server, and the excellent performance wins NordVPN this round.

Number of Devices

CyberGhost happens to offer an additional device connection

CyberGhost beats NordVPN again on the number of device connections, but not by much. NordVPN offers 6 device connections per account, while CyberGhost offers 7. For us, that’s not enough to make CyberGhost the overall winner, even if it is a technically superior VPN client.

Both Cyberghost and NordVPN support almost all existing systems and devices. They offer easy-to-use and attractive apps for the most popular options, including Windows, iOS, Android, Linux, and macOS. They both offer an excellent interface that is intuitive and perfect for beginners. For other devices and systems, there are full, detailed guides so you can configure everything manually.

These include Wi-Fi routers, Blackberry, Xbox/PlayStation consoles, Amazon Fire TV, Raspberry Pi, browser plugins, and more. The only difference between the two is that Cyberghost offers a Light app for everything. Both companies let you specify a country, and you can specify multiple numbers within a country. You can also automatically choose the best service.

Browser Extensions

As mentioned earlier, both NordVPN and cyberGhost have browser extensions for Chrome and Firefox. cyberGhost offers a free browser extension that provides protection from malicious third parties, but does not prevent WebRTC leaks that could compromise your IP address. However, their desktop VPN offers protection and it is recommended that users subscribe if they are not willing to expose themselves to this potential vulnerability. NordVPN users can benefit from similar protection through proxy extensions, but the company does not offer a free version.

Based on Chrome user reviews, CyberGhost comes out on top in this regard. The extension gets a 4.5-star rating compared to NordVPN’s shockingly low 3-star rating. It’s worth noting that only NordVPN allows users to request a dedicated IP address, a feature that saves time and hassle when logging into secure websites.

Pros and Cons for CyberGhost

  1. Automatic shutdown switch
  2. Value-based pricing
  3. Easy account setup
  4. Live chat support
  5. 45 days money back guarantee
  6. DNS and IP leak protection
  7. OpenVPN, L2TP-IPSec and PPTP protocols
  1. Low speed and poor performance
  2. False “no recording” claims
  3. Ad blockers do not work on HTTPS sites

Pros and Cons for NordVPN

  1. 30-day money back guarantee
  2. Live chat support included
  3. Works with Netflix and other streaming systems
  4. Ad-blocker
  5. Double data encryption
  6. Strict no logs policy
  7. Torrenting/ P2P allowed
  1. 30-day money back guarantee Refunds can take up to a month
  2. Discounts apply to long-term subscriptions only

Who Wins CyberGhost or NordVPN?

Both CyberGhost and NordVPN did well in our tests, but overall we ultimately recommend NordVPN. It offers better data protection thanks to features like dual VPNs and a kill switch. It was also more stable and reliable in our tests. However, this doesn’t mean that CyberGhost is bad. So, before you make a final decision, here’s a lesson.

Choose CyberGhost if you are looking for the following

  • More servers and server locations.
  • Shared tunneling: with CyberGhost’s shared tunneling feature, Android and Windows clients have no trouble connecting to both private and public networks.
  • Overall, CyberGhost outperforms NordVPN in terms of upload speed, download speed, and ping. Even in the speed category where NordVPN scores better, CyberGhost is still fast.

Choose NordVPN if you are looking for the following

  • Better privacy: NordVPN’s dual VPN encrypts network traffic twice, compared to CyberGhost’s single encryption.
  • Good mobile app: NordVPN’s app is one of the best we’ve tested. It’s simple, easy to use, and loved by thousands of NordVPN users.
  • Dedicated IP address: Most VPNs use static IP addresses that are shared by thousands of users. However, if you want an IP address that only you can use, NordVPN offers a paid option.

Whichever VPN you choose, the important thing is that you get what you want. If you think CyberGhost and NordVPN aren’t quite right for you, check out our list of the best VPNs. But once you’ve made your decision, there’s no better time than now to get a VPN and start hiding your internet traffic.

Bottom Line

NordVPN and CyberGhost are two of the best VPN services on the market. Both have a number of features that provide the best online experience and help users overcome geographical barriers on websites, while remaining anonymous and protected from any threats. Therefore, NordVPN seems to be the better option, especially for privacy enthusiasts who certainly don’t mind sacrificing some speed to get exceptional double encryption. On the other hand, CyberGhost should not be dismissed so easily, especially given its well-designed interface that allows easy access to the program’s many different uses, making it attractive to even the newest VPN users.

Price is usually a deciding factor, and NordVPN costs $5 less than the equivalent CyberGhost package. However, there is not much difference between the two, with only the latter service offering a one-week free trial – with no service restrictions – which is always better, as it is best to try it out before paying upfront and taking advantage of the refund option.

In the end, it always depends on the user’s preferences what the particular service has to offer. Therefore, there is no better way than to check out the full reviews of both VPNs to learn every little detail about these products.
